Eyelid Ptosis Surgery – Pros and Cons

Are you thinking about eyelid ptosis surgery, blepharoplasty? Blepharoplasty, commonly known as an “eye lift”, lifting a drooping eyelid, is done for practical as well as cosmetic reasons. If you’re considering having this surgery done, you probably have some concerns about the pros and cons of the surgery. What will the surgery accomplish? What are the risks? What can I expect? Let’s take a look at these issues so you can make an informed decision about having this type of surgery.
An obvious positive of the surgery is an improved appearance. The surgery removes fatty deposits above and below the eyes for a more open, youthful appearance. As we age the delicate skin around our eyes looses it’s elasticity and accumulates fatty tissue. Good skin care can help in mitigating this as can good genetics and family history, but eventually it will catch up with you. We all have our Achilles heel about our appearance, the one thing that really bothers us and no matter what steps we take we can never quite fix. If your eyes are your problem spot, then cosmetic eye surgery may be your solution.
You need to have realistic expectations of course. An eyelift isn’t going to solve all the problems in your life, but your improved appearance may be that needed boost to your self confidence that makes you a more assured, confident person.
There are also practical considerations. Some people have a genetically drooping eyelid that actually impairs vision. Eyelid ptosis surgery will lift the drooping eyelid out of the way to make seeing easier.
What about the cons of surgery? Horror stories? Permanently paralyzed eyelid? Side effects like these are just that, horror stories. Of course, any surgery involving our eyes and face holds it’s own terrors of loss of vision and permanent scarring, but these are very rare. You will experience some puffiness and irritation perfect after surgery of course. The swelling will take some days to weeks to go down before you can see the result of your surgery. You may have some temporary numbness to your eyelid, but don’t panic it will clear up as your nerves wake back up! You also might have dry or irritated eyes directly after surgery and your surgeon will most likely give you ointment to sooth and deliver antibiotic protection.
All surgery carries risk and eyelid ptosis surgery is no different. Infection and scarring are always a risk. Consultation with an experienced plastic surgeon and realistic expectations of the results should prepare you for what to expect.
