Remember the days when couples used to flee to an exotic beach location, invite a few guests and enjoy a no-frills wedding ceremony? Recent times have shown that beach weddings have become bigger and more luxurious events as the trend of destination weddings is fuelled by celebrities heading to exotic islands in the Caribbean or the Maldives to tie the knot.

However, beach weddings can still be enjoyed without the fuss and frills, and a huge meringue wedding dress would look out of place on the sandy shores of St Lucia or a beach in Mauritius. Anna Kosturova, a swimwear and resort wear designer, explains how brides can pick the perfect dress for their special ceremony on the beach. “For me, it’s all about the budget,” says Kosturova. “Opulence never looks cool in my eye, especially now with everything that’s going on in the world. That’s not to suggest that we should all go around wearing potato sacks, but you know the less amount of work you have to do for yourself, the better your experience is going to be.” The collection of dresses in Anna’s shop range from floor-length crocheted fitted dresses that can be worn with a simple floppy hat and a pair of flip flops, to strapless silk, full skirted knee-length party dresses that will be perfect for dancing in at the reception. Anna’s top selling dress that brides choose for their tropical weddings is the sexy crocheted Flapper design mini dress. “That one is so easy too,” says Kosturova. “You put a slip underneath [during the ceremony] and after, you just take it off and you have a swimsuit cover-up-yay!” Anna’s advice to brides choosing their dress is to keep it simple. Getting married abroad is becoming increasingly popular with couples all over the world and the top destinations are the Caribbean, Greece, Cyprus, the Maldives, Hawaii and Italy. According to recent research, one in five couples in the UK are choosing to say “I Do” in a foreign country and many brides and grooms are opting for weddings abroad in an attempt to save money and cut back on the guest list. The average UK wedding costs 20,000, whereas the average cost of nuptials in the Caribbean costs about 6,500 and includes a tropical climate, beautiful natural scenery and luxurious accommodation.

Gone are the days when

beach weddings

were basic and included a simple ceremony, a few guests and a floaty dress. These days it’s all about luxury, a wedding planner and the most exotic setting. However, not everyone has to fall into the big wedding trap.
